Sunshine Loans short-term loans: summary

  • Provider and purpose: SunshineLoans Pty Ltd is a direct lender offering unsecured medium amount credit contracts for eligible personal expenses.
  • Amounts and terms: $2,050–$3,500 over 63–182 days, equivalent to 9–26 weeks. Amounts above $2,500 are restricted to eligible returning customers.
  • Interest and comparison rate: Maximum advertised annual percentage rate of 48% p.a. The published comparison rate is 66.2% p.a., calculated on $2,500 over two years; Sunshine does not offer that two-year term.
  • Fees: $400 establishment fee and a $35 failed-payment default fee. No account-keeping or other regular fees are advertised. See the repayment example.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 18. The main application information specifies regular take-home income of at least $750 weekly or $1,500 fortnightly, with income beyond government benefits and repayments that pass affordability assessment.
  • Security and insurance: No asset security is required. No compulsory insurance requirement was identified in the public disclosures inspected; confirm the offered agreement.
  • Application: Online applications are available 24/7. Assessment, approval and signing precede funding.
  • Editorial assessment: Potentially relevant for a one-off expense with a clear repayment budget. The substantial establishment fee and short repayment period are the main limitations.
Founder perspective

Alexander Balanoff on Sunshine Loans

With Sunshine Loans, I would focus on the cost of borrowing for the period you actually need the money. The $400 establishment fee matters when the minimum loan is $2,050, particularly if you expect to repay quickly. Sunshine says early repayment can save money, but I would ask how the establishment fee is treated in the payout figure. My comparison would be the cash received and everything paid by the intended settlement date, including repayments already made. That reveals more than comparing weekly instalments, which can look smaller simply because the debt lasts longer.

Sunshine Loans eligibility and documents

The main eligibility and application pages specify age 18 or older, regular take-home income of at least $750 a week or $1,500 a fortnight, and sufficient capacity to repay without hardship. Income must be visible in bank statements. Meeting these requirements does not establish approval.

Prepare identification, such as a driver’s licence, Medicare card or passport, plus income and bank-account details. Sunshine’s credit information policy describes collecting 90 days of bank statements, employment information, expenses, assets and existing debts.

Disclosure differences: The bad-credit product page shows a $700 weekly income threshold and a 20-week maximum term, while the main eligibility and pricing pages show $750 and up to 26 weeks. This review uses the central application, pricing and target-market disclosures. The Target Market Determination also uses “greater than $750”; applicants earning exactly $750 should confirm eligibility before applying. Detailed residency and visa requirements were not established from the inspected material.

Who should consider a Sunshine short-term loan?

The product is intended for isolated personal expenses, such as an unexpected repair or essential purchase. Its target market excludes business purposes and routine household spending, although accumulated arrears or unusually high bills may qualify under specified circumstances.

Reconsider if you need less than $2,050, already borrow to meet ordinary expenses, or would need another loan to make the repayments. Check No Interest Loans and bill-payment arrangements where applicable. Borrowers eligible for other personal loan options should compare the total cost for the same amount and repayment period.

How Sunshine Loans applications work

Application and assessment

Use Sunshine’s official online application, supply the requested identity and financial information, and complete its assessment process. If approved, review the offered agreement before signing electronically. Check the amount deposited, repayment dates and total payable rather than relying on the advertised maximum.

Approval and funding times

Applications can be submitted at any time. Sunshine advertises funds arriving within seconds after approval and signing; this is not a promise that assessment takes seconds. No fixed decision deadline was verified.

Repayment support and complaints

If a payment may be unaffordable, contact customer support promptly. Sunshine asks for two business days’ notice to adjust payments. Its contact page lists 07 5526 8866 for general enquiries and 07 5646 5969 for hardship or complaints.

Complaints can also be emailed to complaints@sunshineloans.com.au. Unresolved complaints can be taken to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority on 1800 931 678. Free financial counselling is available through the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.

Questions to ask before accepting the agreement

  • How much will reach my bank account, and is the $400 establishment fee financed and charged interest?
  • What annual interest rate, payment schedule and total repayment apply to my offer?
  • Will a credit-report enquiry be recorded, and what information-sharing or marketing permissions am I giving?
  • How is an early payout calculated, and would refinancing trigger another establishment fee?
  • Does the agreement include insurance or another additional product, and what are its cost, conditions and exclusions?

Sunshine Loans advantages and limitations

  • Advantages: No property security, online application and signing, and early repayment without a payout penalty.
  • Cost limitations: The $400 establishment fee is substantial relative to the minimum advance. A short term concentrates repayments into relatively few pay cycles.
  • Access limitations: The minimum borrowing amount may exceed a smaller emergency expense; larger advances depend on returning-customer eligibility.
  • Disclosure limitations: Public pages differ on income, maximum term and credit-check practices. Confirm unresolved points before submitting an application.

Previous prohibited fees and refunds

ASIC reports that the Federal Court found Sunshine charged prohibited amendment fees on earlier small amount credit contracts. This concerns its previous product, not a finding about the current medium amount loan. The ASIC update inspected records that judgment on penalties was reserved after the 21 September 2026 hearing.

Sunshine’s refund programme covers affected amendment or rescheduled-payment fees charged between November 2013 and November 2020. Customers with unresolved refund questions can contact remediation@sunshineloans.com.au or 07 5597 9487.

Sunshine Loans interest, fees and total repayments

The published pricing lists a maximum annual interest rate of 48% plus a $400 establishment fee. The annual interest rate excludes that fee. Sunshine separately lists a $35 failed-payment default fee; missed repayments can therefore increase the amount owed.

The 66.2% p.a. comparison rate uses a $2,500 loan over two years, although Sunshine’s available terms are shorter. It applies only to that example, may exclude some charges, and changes with the loan amount, term and fees. Compare actual contractual totals.

Official $2,050 repayment example

Sunshine publishes approximately $106.25 a week over 26 weeks, with a total repayment of $2,762.48. This comprises $2,050 borrowed, a $400 establishment fee and $312.48 interest: $712.48 above the amount borrowed. The example does not separately identify its calculation rate.

Arithmetic check: Multiplying the rounded weekly payment by 26 gives $2,762.50, two cents above the published total. Confirm the exact final payment in the agreement. Our calculation using the displayed weekly figure gives $425 for four payments or $531.25 for five; budget for the actual due dates. These figures include no default fees or insurance premium and are not a personalised offer.

Is Sunshine Loans worth considering?

Sunshine’s strongest feature is unsecured borrowing with a penalty-free early exit. Its main drawback is the cost of arranging a relatively small advance, compounded by a short repayment period. Compare other short-term borrowing options using the same cash received and repayment term. A lower weekly instalment is useful only if the total cost and repayment dates also suit your budget.

Sunshine Loans frequently asked questions

Can I borrow $500 or $1,000 from Sunshine Loans?

No. Sunshine currently offers unsecured medium amount loans starting at $2,050, with terms of 9–26 weeks. This makes it a different proposition from lenders offering smaller advances: the minimum loan and $400 establishment fee apply even if your expense is substantially lower. When comparing short-term loan providers, check whether each can fund the amount you actually need before comparing repayment figures.

Can a new customer borrow $3,500, or is that limit restricted?

Amounts above $2,500 are restricted to eligible returning customers. Sunshine’s help-centre guidance specifies two previous Sunshine loans completed on time, followed by a fresh assessment. A single successfully repaid loan does not meet that published condition. If you need more than $2,500 immediately, compare lenders’ first-loan limits rather than their highest advertised amounts.

Should I compare Sunshine’s 48% interest rate or its 66.2% comparison rate?

The maximum 48% p.a. interest rate excludes the $400 establishment fee. The 66.2% p.a. comparison rate uses $2,500 over two years, a term Sunshine does not offer, and may exclude some charges. Neither figure alone tells you the cost of your proposed loan. Sunshine’s published example totals $2,762.48 for $2,050 over 26 weeks: $712.48 in interest and establishment costs. Compare written offers for the same cash received and repayment period, including applicable additional charges.

Yes, alongside employment income, including income from casual or part-time work. However, Sunshine excludes applicants relying solely on government benefits, even if those payments meet its main published threshold of $750 a week or $1,500 a fortnight after tax. The eligibility page requires income to appear in bank statements. When comparing providers, distinguish acceptance of Centrelink as supplementary income from acceptance as your only income source.

Does accepting bad credit mean Sunshine will not check my credit file?

No. Considering applicants with defaults or an imperfect credit history does not establish that an application avoids a credit enquiry. Sunshine’s eligibility page advertises “No Credit Checks!”, but its privacy policy describes obtaining credit-reporting information and disclosing application information to Equifax. The public disclosures conflict. Before applying, ask whether Sunshine will access your credit report, whether an enquiry will be recorded, and whether any preliminary eligibility check differs from a full application.

Can self-employed applicants use Sunshine for personal or business expenses?

Sunshine says self-employed people can apply, but its Target Market Determination excludes business purposes. That distinction matters because its FAQs also mention tools and computer upgrades as examples. Confirm that your intended expense qualifies as personal borrowing. Its privacy policy describes collecting 90 days of bank statements; a complete self-employed document checklist and minimum trading history were not verified. Check whether additional business-income evidence is required before applying.

Will repaying early remove the $400 establishment fee?

Sunshine’s FAQs state that early repayment carries no payout fee and can save money. They do not specify whether any establishment fee is refunded. Treat penalty-free repayment and establishment-fee treatment as separate questions. If you expect to settle within a few weeks, request a payout calculation for that date and compare the total cost over your intended borrowing period, rather than assuming the advertised interest rate determines your savings.

Is a Sunshine top-up extra borrowing on the same account?

Sunshine describes its top-up option as refinancing: a new loan pays out the existing balance, with the remainder deposited into your account. It is therefore different from withdrawing available funds from a revolving credit facility. Request a breakdown of the old balance being settled, new borrowing, cash received and new fees, including whether another establishment fee applies. Compare the new total repayment with the payments remaining on your existing loan; part of the new borrowing replaces debt rather than providing additional cash.

Can I move a repayment date, and will that avoid the $35 default fee?

Sunshine asks for two business days’ notice to reschedule or adjust payments and advertises a $35 failed-payment default fee. Giving notice does not itself establish that a change has been accepted or a fee waived. Ask for confirmation of the revised due date, whether the original debit will still run, and any effect on interest or charges. If affordability has deteriorated, request hardship assistance rather than assuming refinancing is required.
