Pepper Money personal loan review: secured and unsecured options
- Provider: Pepper Money Personal Loans is a Pepper Money Limited brand. Credit is provided by Now Finance Group Pty Ltd as agent for NF Finco 2 Pty Limited.
- Purpose and amounts: Unsecured loans from $5,000 to $50,000; secured loans from $15,000 to $100,000, with loans solely for car purchases capped at $50,000. Uses include renovations, personal expenses and eligible debt consolidation.
- Terms and repayments: Secured loans run for 18–84 months. Unsecured borrowing of $5,000–$7,999 has an 18–36-month term; $8,000–$50,000 allows 18–84 months. Repayments are weekly or fortnightly by direct debit.
- Interest and comparison rates: Personalised fixed rates of 5.95%–21.65% p.a. secured and 5.95%–26.95% p.a. unsecured. Published comparison rates match those ranges. The minimum rate is not available to every applicant; see the cost qualifications.
- Fees and insurance: New loans have no establishment, administration or early repayment fees; secured loans also have no security registration fee. Third-party enforcement or recovery costs may apply following non-compliance. Secured-asset insurance requirements need confirmation in the agreement.
- Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 18, Australian citizens or permanent residents, and meet income, credit and affordability requirements. Some published employment and credit-history criteria conflict.
- Application: Apply online or call 1300 108 794. Requesting an indicative rate does not affect your credit score; proceeding to a full application creates a credit enquiry.
- Assessment: Suits borrowers seeking predictable repayments and freedom to repay early. The main limitation is the wide pricing range: a higher personalised rate can outweigh the benefit of having no routine loan fees.
Alexander Balanoff on Pepper Money
With Pepper Money, I would compare the personalised rate and total repayment, including any broker fee, against other offers for the same amount and term. The distinction between no lender fees and no additional costs matters: a broker’s origination fee may be added to the balance and accrue interest. I would ask how much borrowing funds my needs and how much covers arranging the loan. If pledging an asset lowers the rate, that introduces another trade-off. The useful question is whether the saving justifies the additional costs and the asset put at risk.
Pepper Money personal loan eligibility and documents
Applicants must be at least 18 and hold Australian citizenship or permanent residency. Employees must not be on probation. Self-employed applicants need an established business history: the current target market documents specify an ABN registered for at least two years. Approval also depends on verified income, expenditure, existing debts and the ability to maintain repayments.
Prepare acceptable Australian identification, proof of address, employment and income evidence, rent or mortgage details, and information about existing credit commitments. The fact sheet requests 90 days of bank statements for all applications; self-employed applicants also need appropriate tax or business-income evidence.
Confirm borderline eligibility before applying. The eligibility page excludes paid and unpaid defaults and active payday loans. However, the FAQs allow one paid telecommunications or utility default, while the older fact sheet permits some payday-loan consolidation subject to credit score. Casual-employment requirements also differ: the eligibility page says more than three months, whereas the application portal specifies six months. These discrepancies remain unresolved.
Who should consider a Pepper Money personal loan?
The product is worth comparing if you need a defined lump sum, have reliable income and want fixed repayments with the option to reduce the balance early. The unsecured version avoids pledging an asset; secured borrowing may offer a lower rate or larger amount, but puts the pledged asset at risk if you default.
Reconsider if you need ongoing access to money, expect to redraw extra repayments or cannot comfortably cover essential expenses alongside the loan. For debt consolidation, compare the remaining cost of your existing debts with the proposed loan’s total repayment. Extending repayment over seven years can reduce instalments while increasing overall interest.
Compare equivalent personal loan offers using the same amount and term. For a car costing more than $50,000, investigate a separate car finance product rather than assuming Pepper’s $100,000 secured limit applies.
How the application and repayments work
Application process
- Request an indicative rate through Pepper Money’s application portal or contact the personal loan team on 1300 108 794.
- If you proceed, complete the application and provide financial, identity and any security documents. The lender checks your credit file and assesses affordability.
- Review the final rate, repayment schedule, security conditions and total payable before accepting. An indicative rate is not approval and may change after verification.
Read the application’s privacy and credit-reporting disclosures before authorising access to your information.
How long does funding take?
Pepper advertises an online application taking around 10 minutes and an initial response in two minutes. That response should not be treated as unconditional approval. Funding is generally advertised within one to two business days after approval, subject to completed documentation and bank processing.
Repayment difficulties and complaints
If repayments become unaffordable, contact the personal loan team and request a hardship assessment. For servicing questions or complaints, use customerservice@pepperlending.com.au or 1300 108 794. The personal loan complaints policy provides for escalation to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority on 1800 931 678 if you are dissatisfied with the response.
Questions to ask before accepting an offer
- What is my final fixed rate, regular repayment and total amount repayable?
- For secured borrowing, what asset is pledged, what insurance is required, and could a balance remain after repossession and sale?
- Which debts will be paid out directly, and does consolidation extend their repayment period?
- What third-party recovery costs could be passed on, and what happens if a direct debit fails?
- If an employment or credit-history exception applies, has eligibility been confirmed before a full credit enquiry?
Pepper Money personal loan advantages and limitations
- Advantage — repayment flexibility: Extra repayments and early settlement carry no lender penalty, allowing borrowers to reduce interest when spare cash becomes available.
- Advantage — predictable structure: Fixed principal-and-interest repayments repay the loan over its agreed term without a balloon payment.
- Limitation — personalised cost: Approval does not mean access to the advertised minimum rate. Compare the written offer, especially near the upper end of the range.
- Limitation — no redraw: Extra repayments cannot be withdrawn again. Keep an adequate cash buffer before paying additional money into the loan.
- Limitation — security risk: A lower secured rate must be weighed against possible loss of the pledged asset.
Pepper Money interest rates, fees and total cost
The published pricing uses annual fixed interest rates and comparison rates, rather than a separate APR figure. Pepper’s comparison-rate warning specifies a secured loan of $30,000 over five years. Different amounts, terms and charges can produce a different comparison rate, and the published figure may not include every cost.
For new loans, the fee schedule lists $0 establishment, monthly administration, early repayment and fixed-rate break fees, plus $0 security registration fees where applicable. The no-fee offer does not remove interest or potential third-party enforcement and recovery costs.
Insurance: The public product documents inspected do not establish whether insurance is compulsory for secured borrowing. Obtain the requirement, premium, excess and relevant exclusions before comparing total costs. Do not assume asset insurance covers unemployment or loan repayments.
Official repayment example
Pepper publishes an unsecured example of $30,000 over five years at 5.95% p.a., with a 5.95% p.a. comparison rate and estimated total repayments of $34,703.50 using weekly payments. That is $4,703.50 above the amount borrowed.
For budgeting, dividing the published total across 60 months gives approximately $578.39 per month; this is an editorial monthly equivalent, not a monthly repayment option. The example assumes access to the minimum rate and is not a personalised quote. Any required insurance needs to be considered separately.
Is a Pepper Money personal loan worth considering?
Pepper’s strongest feature is the combination of fixed repayments, no routine lender fees and penalty-free early repayment. Its main limitation is the potentially high personalised rate. The decisive comparison is your written total repayment against another offer for the same amount and term, with insurance and security risks included.
Pepper Money personal loan FAQs
Are Pepper Money and NOW Finance separate lenders when comparing personal loans?
Pepper Money personal loans are provided by Now Finance Group Pty Ltd as agent for NF Finco 2 Pty Limited. Pepper supplies the brand and distribution channel. For comparison purposes, these are not unrelated credit providers. However, shared lending arrangements do not establish identical offers: compare each written quote, application channel and any intermediary charges before deciding.
Is Pepper Money cheaper than a personal loan with application or monthly fees?
Not necessarily. A lower interest rate elsewhere can outweigh that lender’s fees, particularly on a larger balance or longer term. Compare total repayments for the same amount and repayment period. Pepper’s product documents effective 21 September 2026 also distinguish its no-lender-fee offer from a separate broker origination fee, which may be financed into the loan. If using a broker, ask for the fee and the additional interest payable on it. Third-party recovery costs may also apply following non-compliance.
Can I compare Pepper’s personalised rate without affecting my credit score?
Yes. Pepper’s indicative rate enquiry does not affect your credit score, whereas proceeding to a full application creates a credit enquiry. This makes the initial quote useful for comparing likely pricing before applying. The estimate is not approval: Pepper’s pricing conditions allow the final rate and repayments to change after verification of your finances or security. Check whether another provider’s quotation also avoids a full application enquiry.
Does Pepper accept paid defaults, bankruptcy or a debt agreement?
Its published criteria exclude financial defaults, unpaid defaults and current or previous bankruptcy; the FAQs also exclude current or past Part IX debt agreements. Paid telecommunications and utility defaults need clarification: the FAQs allow one, but the eligibility page excludes all defaults. Obtain confirmation about your specific listing before making a full application. A paid default should not be assumed acceptable simply because the debt is settled.
Can Centrelink income help me qualify alongside wages?
Potentially. Pepper’s FAQs allow Centrelink benefits as supplementary employment income, provided they represent no more than 50% of total income; Centrelink cannot be the primary income source. Acceptance remains subject to assessment. When comparing providers, establish which of your benefit payments each lender recognises and how much it counts towards affordability, rather than relying on a general statement that Centrelink is accepted.
Does Pepper offer personal loans to self-employed applicants without full income evidence?
Pepper accepts self-employed applicants, but its published requirements do not establish a low-documentation personal loan option. The current target market documents require an ABN registered for at least two years; the eligibility page specifies self-employment tenure exceeding 24 months. Income, expenses and existing commitments still require verification. An older ABN alone does not demonstrate repayment capacity, so confirm the evidence required if your business has recently restarted or your earnings fluctuate.
Can I choose a seven-year term and repay the loan early without penalties?
Yes, if eligible for that term. Secured loans and unsecured amounts from $8,000 offer terms up to seven years; unsecured amounts of $5,000–$7,999 are limited to three years. Pepper permits extra repayments and early settlement without lender penalties, despite the fixed interest rate. However, extra payments cannot be redrawn. Compared with a loan offering redraw, this reduces access to cash you have already paid in. A longer term also costs more interest if you follow only the minimum repayment schedule.
How does Pepper’s credit-card consolidation compare with a balance transfer?
For approved credit-card consolidation, Pepper pays the existing lender directly after settlement and replaces the debt with scheduled loan repayments. A balance-transfer comparison should include the transfer fee, promotional period and rate payable on any remaining balance afterwards. For Pepper, use your personalised rate and total repayment over the proposed term. Ask whether paid-out cards must be closed separately; paying their balances does not establish that the accounts have been closed.
Can I consolidate overdue debts or borrow for tax and business expenses?
Pepper excludes mortgage, rent and credit arrears, tax debts, payment of defaults or judgements, and business purposes. Its eligibility page also excludes active payday loans. These restrictions distinguish eligible debt consolidation from borrowing to clear overdue obligations. Being self-employed does not make business expenditure an accepted purpose for this personal loan. Confirm the exact debts and intended use before submitting an application.
